What 'Escrow Only' Means on a Vendor Profile
If a vendor profile says it runs in escrow only mode, that is not a warning, it is a description of a restriction the vendor has on itself, and it is one of the more buyer-friendly things a profile can show.
Normally a vendor, once trusted enough, can finalize an order early, meaning they can release the escrow payment to themselves before you confirm receipt, on the strength of their track record. A vendor in escrow only mode cannot do that. Their orders stay in escrow until you, the buyer, confirm the item arrived. The vendor has no shortcut. The money does not move until you say it arrived.
This matters most for new vendors, which is exactly who runs in this mode. A vendor with a short history has not earned the right to finalize early, so every order they take is locked in escrow until you confirm it. For you that means the full weight of the escrow protection, with no reliance on the vendor's goodwill to release the money fairly. It is the strongest position a buyer can be in, and it is automatic for the vendors you are most likely to be wary of.
The flip side is small but real. A vendor who cannot finalize early is a vendor who gets paid later, which is a mild disincentive for them and can show up as slightly slower service or a slightly higher price to cover the float. It is a minor trade, and for a new vendor it is a trade you should be happy to make, because the protection is worth more than the convenience.
Reading this status correctly changes how you think about a new vendor. Instead of a new vendor being a risk to avoid, an escrow only vendor is a new vendor with the strongest available protection turned on. The risk is still there, a new vendor can still ship something wrong, but the money is locked until you say otherwise, which is exactly the arrangement you want when you are still learning whether a vendor is good.
